I am learning that Family Photography isn’t quite as simple as many photographers make it out to be. I got out of the “catch the moment” phase of photography, and am learning to instead create art using photography. Family photographs are no different in my mind. Your family picture should be as artistic as a magazine cover glamour portrait, and that simply does not happen if you let the family members just “act natural.” I do love to capture a laugh, interaction, and family dynamic, but with the right guidance, a good image can become great. Learning how to accomplish this is still an on-going process, and I think it will be a rewarding journey.
These photos of a few members of the Fa’amausili family show the beginning of my family portraits journey. They were lovely women, easy to pose, and gave me glorious images. They really wanted a more timeless photo, which I feel we accomplished!
